The Senior Life Safety Engineer is responsible for ensuring that effective compliant fire and life safety services are provided among all system-wide Carilion facilities, while administering the fire and life safety program through review of plans and specifications, review of national, state, local codes, Joint Commission standards, and other regulatory requirements. The Senior Life Safety Engineer will work with regulators and Clinic management to ensure that fire and life safety hazards are identified and corrected, and will serve as the principal knowledge source of Fire and Life Safety Codes. In addition, the Senior Life Safety Engineer provides education and consultation to executives, managers, employees, contractors, regulators, and the public, ensures that fire and life safety inspections are conducted, and maintains the integrity of the Clinic’s life safety program and its compliance with all applicable codes, ordinances, and regulations.

The Senior Life Safety Engineer has responsibility for fire and Life safety compliance and initiatives system wide, and will communicate and develop solutions with Authorities Having Jurisdiction and other regulators. Additional responsibilities include presenting to both internal and external clients, providing problem-solving, consultation, advising or providing interpretation services to a wide range of stakeholders inside and outside the organization. The Senior Life Safety Engineer also provides input into budget and cost containment initiatives, provides analysis to aid in budget formulation, and will track code related expenses using the discretion and critical thinking skills that are required to make judgments in Life Safety/Fire Code related interpretations. This position does require a high level of technical knowledge and the ability work on a team and to communicate effectively with all stakeholders and customers.

Minimum Qualifications

Education: Bachelor’s degree in Fire Protection, Safety, Engineering or related field required. Masters Degree preferred.

Experience: Ten years of related experience in the Life Safety/ Fire Safety field required. Specialized knowledge of building systems, utility systems, and fire protection systems (fire detection and/or suppression system(s)) preferred. Experience applying the Life Safety Codes, National Fire Codes, Joint Commission standards, and state/local codes related to daily operations and construction/renovation activities preferred.

Licensure/Certifications/Registration: Professional Engineering (PE) License or Certified Health Facilities Manager (CHFM) preferred. Valid Virginia Driver’s License required. NFPA Certified Life Safety Specialist (CLSS-HC) for Health Care Facilty Managers, NFPA Certified Fire Protection Specialist (CFPS) within 18 months of hire.

Other Minimum Qualifications: Strong interpersonal, organization, and teamwork skills. Demonstrated project management experience. Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing with diversified individuals and groups. Ability to maintain required records and be highly knowledgeable of all codes, standards, rules and policies. A working knowledge of test equipment and process improvement techniques preferred. Proficiency with Microsoft Office, AutoCAD, and other computer applications required.
